چکیده

When an engine component participating in the combustion process of an internal combustion piston engine, malfunctions, this malfunction may be reeected in the ensuing cylinder pressure traces, acoustic emission and vibration signals. In this paper, we explore the idea of exploiting information detected by pressure, vibration and acoustic emission sensors in order to develop fault diagnostic classiiers. It is shown that, following training on examples of normal operation of a diesel engine and 4 fault conditions, Artiicial Neural Nets based on data from any one of these three sensors can be used to identify the fault condition. In addition a system consisting of an ensemble of three nets, each of which is based on a diierent sensor, can be assembled. The advantages of such a system in terms of protection against sensor failure are discussed.

Gearbox Tooth Cut Fault Diagnostics Using Acoustic Emission and Vibration Sensors — A Comparative Study

In recent years, acoustic emission (AE) sensors and AE-based techniques have been developed and tested for gearbox fault diagnosis. In general, AE-based techniques require much higher sampling rates than vibration analysis-based techniques for gearbox fault diagnosis. Therefore, it is questionable whether an AE-based technique would give a better or at least the same performance as the vibratio...

An LPV Approach to Sensor Fault Diagnosis of Robotic Arm

One of the major challenges in robotic arms is to diagnosis sensor fault. To address this challenge, this paper presents an LPV approach. Initially, the dynamics of a two-link manipulator is modelled with a polytopic linear parameter varying structure and then by using a descriptor system approach and a robust design of a suitable unknown input observer by means of pole placement method along w...

Cylinder Pressures and Vibration in Internal Combustion Engine Condition Monitoring

Abstract: We focus on the detection of incipient faults in an internal combustion engine using a minimum number of sensory information. Inducing several faults in a 4 stroke diesel engine, cylinder pressure (P) and vibration (V) data are acquired. Two sets of artificial neural nets (ANN) are trained separately, using features from the pressure and vibration data. Both sets of nets show very goo...
